“Kudai kavizhthaalum kavizhthuvidum”

Ponniyin Selvan

“Kudai kavizhthaalum kavizhthuvidum” is an idiom about sudden reversal: even the protection or good fortune a person relies on may be overturned. Azhwarkkadiyaan Nambi uses it to remind Vandhiyathevan that destiny will not necessarily keep favouring him, giving the warning a political resonance through its image of the fallen royal parasol.

Meaning and Origin

The saying literally means “your umbrella might well be upended.” Its umbrella is not an ordinary shelter but the ornate state parasol held over a ruler, the Venkotra Kudai, a representation of monarchy. Its fall traditionally signals catastrophe to kingship; over time, the image broadened into a warning of disaster in general. The expression therefore carries both a personal meaning—fortune can turn—and an older political one: the collapse of royal protection or order.

The Exchange Between Azhwarkkadiyaan Nambi and Vandhiyathevan

Azhwarkkadiyaan Nambi applies the saying while cautioning Vandhiyathevan against assuming that destiny will always intervene for him. He imagines that it could instead overturn his good fortune through a beautiful witch, a mayamohini. Vandhiyathevan answers with a grin that he is not prone to such stumbles and that honey-traps are meant for others. The exchange sets the Vaishnavite’s caution against Vandhiyathevan’s confidence, making the proverb a pointed warning rather than a detached observation.

Dramatic Context and Significance

The conversation turns on Vandhiyathevan’s interest in whether Pazhuvoor Ilaiya Rani will travel with her husband or choose another way. Soon afterward, Periya Pazhuvettarayar arrives at the palace on an elephant, followed by the queen, in full public view rather than in a closed palanquin. This immediate shift from talk of a beautiful enchantress to the queen’s conspicuous arrival gives Azhwarkkadiyaan Nambi’s warning a concrete dramatic setting. The idiom does not announce a specific disaster; instead, it punctures Vandhiyathevan’s assurance that he is immune to a reversal, while its royal image allows a casual exchange to echo the larger vulnerabilities of power.
